Job Summary:

The Office of Strategic Communication, the central communications and content hub for UW-Madison, is in search of a creative and strategic Assistant Director of Social Media that will provide key support for managing and shaping the university's social media accounts.
We are looking for someone who is excited by higher ed communications and social media and is comfortable with both strategy development and hands-on content planning and creation. This role will conceptualize, plan and create social media content for distribution across senior leadership and institutional channels to advance the university's priorities and engage target audiences. A primary function of this role will be to work closely with campus leaders, including the university's chancellor, to help manage their social presence. The role will work with leadership to produce sharp, engaging written and visual content that captures an individual's perspective and conveys a range of messages on their channels - from serious campus news to spirited posts that evoke a feeling of inspired goofiness to community highlights. In addition, the Assistant Director of Social Media will plan meetings with and provide guidance, resources and support to social media professionals across campus, especially in the area of executive communications.
This role reports to the Director of Institutional Social Media and will collaborate with leadership, communications professionals and student staff.

Responsibilities:

Develops and supervises the execution of communication programs and may supervise personnel and/or other resources in support of institutional or unit communication goals.
  • 20% Manages the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives
  • 40% Plans, writes, and edits content for various internal and external stakeholders
  • 10% Plans and directs unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets
  • 10% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • 10% Develops, implements, and delivers communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences
  • 5% Track progress and report on social media metrics and insights
  • 5% Monitor social media for content opportunities and moderate social media posts following guidance

Tasks:

  • Plans and conceptualizes strategies, campaigns and social content for senior leadership accounts
  • Communicates with leadership and campus partners on strategy, plans and content coordination
  • Provides guidance, resources and consultation via meetings and Teams channel to social media practitioners across campus
  • Attends events and captures takeaways and visuals for content
  • Writes, edits, publishes and shares content on social platforms
  • Directs, coordinates and creates visual content
  • Assists with institutional account strategy and content as needed
  • Monitors, learns from and reports on social media analytics
  • Stays up-to-date on best practices and emerging social media platforms
  • Develops and maintains a social media calendar for leadership accounts
  • Monitors social media channels for messages, comments and reactions, responding when appropriate

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Candidates with a background in journalism, strategic communications or digital production are encouraged to apply

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:
5 years of experience in communications and/or marketing.
PREFERRED:
- Experience managing corporate, nonprofit, institutional or influencer social media accounts, developing and implementing innovative social campaigns across channels
- Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, visual and attention-grabbing content for an individual or brand.
- Experience working with institutional, organizational or corporate leadership on communications, including social media accounts, and experience writing in first-person point of view for leadership
- Track record of management of higher ed or campus accounts
- Experience evaluating the effectiveness of social accounts and campaigns to reach strategic objectives
- Experience capturing and editing photos desired. Ability to create and edit short social videos and Reels a plus. Graphic design and animation skills a plus
- Demonstrated experience working cooperatively and professionally
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex projects, manage shifting priorities
- Experience with crisis communications
- Experience adhering to and supporting brand standards across communications channels

Full Time: 100%
This is a hybrid position, working partially remote and partially in-person on the UW-Madison campus.
Some evening and weekend hours may be required, with the employee able to flex their schedule to accommodate work outside regular business hours.

Salary:

Minimum $70,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The expected starting salary range for this position is $70,000-85,000. Actual salary will be based on the candidate's qualifications.
